TOP TIPS
There are many useful ideas listed below that will help you to get maximum value from any coach that you work with. In all positive interpersonal relationships, a set of expectations, boundaries and exit strategies are agreed upon early in the relationship. This facilitates the coaching process by letting each person know what to expect during the coaching sessions.

While every coach and client works slightly differently, these ideas will help you to decide if you are really ready to enter into a coaching relationship.

  1. Coaching is a process that usually has five phases:
    • Initial excitement that things are going to get better.
    • Initial realization that the process may take a while and will involve doing new things that may feel uncomfortable at first.

    • Identifying and realizing that "old scripts" that are getting in the way and deeply entrenched. This is where the realization sets in that change is not easy, but absolutely necessary. Sometimes it feels like you won't be successful. You just have to power through this part and have faith.

    • The corner has been turned and the first positive steps show you that you are on your way.

    • Your new life emerges.
  2. Take responsibility for your own situation. You are a contributor to what is happening. Do not settle for the role of "victim" or "martyr". Life is not fair. Fair is where you go on rides and eat cotton candy.

  3. Accept that what you are currently doing isn't working. It will be harder to do better without changing some elements of your current behavior.

  4. Be open to views and ideas that are new and different.
  5. Put your faith and trust in your coach. If he/she doesn't continue to earn and justify your faith and trust, find another coach.

  6. Coaching is about facing your fears. It is not an easy process. If you are looking for easy answers, buy lottery tickets.

  7. Feedback is the breakfast of champions. Listen to what you are hearing before judging or disagreeing with it. Remember:

    • If one person offers feedback to you on a topic, maybe there is just a personality or style mismatch.

    • If two people offer feedback to you on the same topic, there may be a theme here.

    • If three people offer feedback to you on the same topic, it's you.
  8. Ask every question you can think of.
  9. If you are anxious about any step of the process or about options suggested, say so. There will be no judgment and it will help you and your coach.

  10. Whenever you feel defensive, it is likely that your coach has hit a raw nerve. Listen carefully to what is being said, even if you don't like it or initially agree with it.

  11. When you are asked to do homework (trying out new skills), do it. No excuses, please. It just delays the process.

  12. If you don't agree with what your coach is saying, say so. It will be appreciated and move the process along more quickly. Luxuriate in the process. Life will become better.
